A highly skilled, minimally invasive surgery called per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is allowing kids with a swallowing disorder called esophageal achalasia -- a condition in which tight muscle fibers in the lower esophagus prevent food and liquids from passing through to the stomach -- to live normal lives again. James Wall, MD, was featured in this press release as performing the POEM procedure on one of the first pediatric patients in North America to receive this surgery.
