  • “This feeling of ‘we are all in this together’ makes the practice of pediatrics enjoyable and gratifying.”

I have been practicing general pediatrics for over 25 years. Over the years the role of the pediatrician has changed from instructing families to a model of cooperative communication. The goal is always to enhance the growth and development of the child, but also to enhance the growth of the entire family. This feeling of "we are all in this together" makes the practice of pediatrics enjoyable and gratifying.

I always meet each child at eye level; it's a good way to make sure each doctor visit is positive. Directly greeting children and involving them in the conversation gives them the sense that they are valuable members of the care team and that their answers matter too. For older children and teens, I direct my questions to them and involve them in the care process. Parents are involved in the conversation but the focus is always on the young person in the room.
