Child Life Specialist Internship

About Our Internship Program

The child life internship at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford is an intensive 15 week program that provides training and education for senior level bachelor or graduate level students pursuing a career as a Child Life Specialist. Interns are required to be affiliated with a college/ university and be currently enrolled during their internship. Applicants must also meet and have completed specific child life intern requirements, including completion of Association of Child Life Professionals approved core coursework, to be considered for our internship program. Ability to commit to the full-time 40 hour a week program for all 15 weeks, in addition to required readings and assignments during the internship, is required. Our staff provide services throughout the day and night, as well as year round for our patients and families; therefore, Interns must also be able to work flexible hours/days depending on the needs of their unit, including potential nights (in the ED) or weekends. Specific rotations and hours will be discussed and determined with the intern during their orientation.

Internship Dates

The Child Life Internship program will be taking a temporary hiatus due to the hospital expansion and will resume following this transition in 2018. Please continue to check the website for updated information.

Applying for the Internship

Our program adheres to all of the guidelines, requirements, and deadlines set for by the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP). Applicants complete the common Child Life Internship application created by the ACLP, as well as all the materials outlined in the Stanford Children's Health Child Life Internship application packet. Due to great interest and limited space, applications will only be considered if all child life intern requirements are met and internship packets are fully completed and post marked by the ACLP application deadline. Please do not submit an application if you do not fully meet all of the requirements at the time of application.

Application Process

Once all applications have been received following the ACLP deadline, we will review the applications then set up phone interviews with selected applicants that meet the qualification requirements. The top few candidates will then participate in a face-to-face interview with our internship staff, either on-site at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford or via video conferencing. We offer one child life intern position each semester and application to the program does not guarantee an interview or internship offer. Prior to joining our internship program, students must complete security clearance through a background check and meet with Occupational Health to provide proof of up-to-date immunizations and complete a TB screen, as required by our hospital.

If you have additional questions or needs regarding the child life internship, please contact the Child Life and Creative Arts department at (650) 497-8336.
