Conditions We Treat

The Betty Irene Moore Children’s Heart Center care team at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford treats infants and children with all forms of congenital heart disease, from common conditions to extremely complex and high-risk cases. Below is a list of conditions we typically see in our Fetal Cardiology practice.

Low-risk conditions

If your baby has a low-risk condition, we work with your obstetrical provider to maintain your existing delivery plan. Examples of these conditions are:

• Atrial or ventricular septal defects
• Balanced complete atrioventricular canal defect or atrioventricular septal defect
• Mild valve regurgitation or stenosis
• Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return
• Premature atrial contractions
• Tetralogy of Fallot with mild pulmonary stenosis

Moderate and higher risk conditions

Most of the time, babies with a higher risk condition can still be delivered locally. However, there are times when we recommend delivering at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, where you have access to highly specialized care for your infant right after birth. If this is the case, our team will give you information about local housing resources and provide other support. Our team will also work with your other providers to facilitate a seamless transition of obstetrical care to Stanford Children’s Health. Examples of moderate or higher risk conditions are:

• Absent ductus venosus
• Aortic arch hypoplasia, or interruption
• Aortic stenosis (AS)
• Cardiac tumors
• Coarctation of the aorta (CoA)
• Congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (also known as L-transposition of the great arteries)
• Congenital heart block
• Ebstein’s anomaly
• Double inlet left ventricle
• Double outlet right ventricle
• Fetal arrhythmias, such as atrial flutter or supraventricular tachycardia
• Heterotaxy syndrome
• Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS)
• Pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum (PA/IVS)
• Scimitar syndrome
• Single ventricle congenital heart disease
• Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) with more than mild pulmonary stenosis or absent pulmonary valve
• Tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia and MAPCAs
• Total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR)
• Transposition of the great arteries (TGA)
• Tricuspid atresia (TA)
• Truncus arteriosus (TA)
• Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS)
• Unbalanced complete atrioventricular canal/septal defect
