Stanford Medicine Children’s Health Special Care Nursery at Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital

At Stanford Medicine Children’s Health Special Care Nursery at Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital, we provide a wide range of intensive care services to recovering newborns and those who require specialized care during the first weeks of life—all with the personal attention that each family deserves. The Special Care Nursery is a six-bed, Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that’s located within the Sequoia Hospital Birth Center and operated by Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.

Infants may be transferred from the Packard Children’s Hospital Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Level II Intermediate Care Nursery if they meet certain criteria. The decision to transfer is made after a discussion between your family and your care team.

What to expect if your baby will receive continued care at Packard Children’s Special Care Nursery at Sequoia Hospital

Exceptional care

The Special Care Nursery at Sequoia Hospital has all of the latest technology that you’d expect from a leading medical facility, but is offered in a personalized community hospital setting. Babies may have:

  • Low birth weight or prematurity.
  • Breathing problems.
  • Suspected or confirmed infections.
  • Newborn jaundice.
  • Feeding difficulty.
  • Low glucose.
  • Temperature regulation problems.

Care team

The nursery is run and operated by doctors and nurses on the Packard Children’s Hospital neonatology team, which includes Packard Children’s neonatologists, pediatricians, and nurses; a pediatric ophthalmologist; a social worker; physical and occupational therapists; and developmental specialists. Lactation consultants, chaplains, and respiratory therapists with training in newborn care are available through Sequoia Hospital. The Packard Children’s Hospital pediatric pharmacy provides all medications and specialized nutrition for our young patients at Sequoia Hospital. Altogether, we provide a full spectrum of family-centered care at our Intermediate Special Care Nursery at Sequoia Hospital.

Family focus

The care team focuses on a baby’s nutrition and growth as well as creating enhanced bonding opportunities for parents. Sequoia Hospital’s lactation consultant nurses are available to support breastfeeding during your stay and through the early weeks after you go home.
