Caregivers at Stanford Children's Health

The health and safety of all of our patients and staff are important to us. Over the last few months, we have made changes to our visiting policies to help keep everyone safe. We are continuing to make changes to help prevent the spread of infection. This handout will tell you more about the new rules for Stanford Children's Health.

Who can come to clinic appointments?

For maternity clinic visits, one support person is allowed to be at the appointment.

For pediatric clinic visits, two caregivers are allowed to be at the appointment.

Caregivers must:

  • Be 16 years or older
  • Wear the mask given to them by the clinic at all times

Who can be at the hospital bedside?

Caregivers must:

  • Be 16 years or older
  • Wear the mask given to them by the hospital at all times

For patients who have tested positive for COVID-19, one caregiver is allowed to be at the bedside. Caregivers must stay in their child's room while in the hospital. This helps prevent the spread of infection.

For maternity patients in the hospital who have tested negative for COVID-19, two caregivers can be at the bedside.

For pediatric patients in the hospital who have tested negative for COVID-19, two caregivers can be at the bedside.

Caregivers must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Wear the mask given to them by the hospital at all times

What if a caregiver has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or is waiting for COVID-19 test results?

To keep everyone safe, caregivers who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or who are waiting for their COVID-19 test results and have COVID-19 symptoms cannot be at the bedside. These caregivers need to stay home until they feel better and cannot give COVID-19 to anyone else.

When is it safe for caregivers to come back into the hospital or clinic visit?

When you can come back to the hospital depends on your symptoms.

The 10 days you have to say out of the hospital starts 1 after day you get your COVID results or notice symptoms.

Caregiver Symptoms

When can you come back to the hospital

Tested positive with symptoms

  • 10 days after positive test AND

  • 24 hours with no fever or feeling better without using fever-reducing medication like Tylenol or Advil.

Tested positive without symptoms

10 days after the day symptoms first appeared

What if a caregiver has been exposed or near someone who has COVID-19 outside of the Hospital?

To keep everyone safe, caregivers who have been around someone with COVID-19 cannot be at the bedside. These caregivers need to:

  • Stay at home and quarantine for 10 days. The 10 days you have to stay home starts 1 day after you were exposed to COVID-19.

And

  • Watch for COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days

If a caregiver develops any COVID-19 symptoms, they need to be tested for COVID-19 and would follow the guidance stated in the first question.

If the only exposure the caregiver has to COVID-19 is a hospitalized loved one they are with, and they do not have any symptoms, then they are allowed to be at the bedside.

Who can stay overnight?

For patients who have tested negative for COVID-19:

  • One caregiver may stay at the bedside overnight with patients in CVICU, PICU, and Maternity.
  • Two caregivers may stay at the bedside overnight with patients in acute care units.

For patients who have tested positive for COVID-19:

  • One caregiver may stay overnight

Can siblings or friends visit?

No siblings or friends can visit at this time, other than breastfeeding infants up to six months of age who are with the breastfeeding mother.

When should caregivers stay home?

Caregivers who do not feel well should stay home. Caregivers with a cough, runny nose, sneezes, fever, sore throat or other symptoms should stay home.

How is Stanford Children's Health keeping families safe?

The health and safety of all of our patients/families and staff are important to us. Everyone coming to the hospital and clinics will be checked at the front desk for symptoms of COVID-19. We are asking everyone to:

  • Wash their hands often
  • Wear masks
  • Keep 6 feet away from others when possible

Does this mean different caregivers can come to the hospital each day?

For the health and safety of everyone, we are asking that all caregivers try to stay in the room as much as possible. By having caregivers staying in the room you are helping to prevent the spread of infections.
