Safety guidelines for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The health and safety of everyone at Stanford Children’s Health is important to us. While your child is on COVID-19 precautions in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) we ask that you follow specific guidelines to help keep everyone safe. This handout will give you more information on these guidelines.

While your child is on COVID-19 precautions, we ask that you only leave your child’s room to use the restroom. Please speak with our NICU staff before going to the restroom, they can show you how to get to the one that is closest to your baby’s bed.

Please follow these safety steps before and after using the restroom:

  • wash your hands before walking to the restrooms
  • wear a mask
  • go straight to the restroom
  • come right back to your child’s room
  • wash your hands again before entering your child’s room

Can I go to anywhere else in the hospital?

Please do not go to any of the other common areas of the hospital, including the cafeteria.

How do I get food or snacks if I am hungry?

You may order meal trays directly to your child’s room. If you need help doing this please speak with the NICU staff.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep everyone safe. If you have any questions and concerns, please ask your child’s nurse or the NICU charge nurse and they will be happy to help you.
