What to Expect
When staying at the hospital
Your child with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) will receive comprehensive care from our team of neonatologists who are experts in caring for premature infants. Multi-specialty care for your child includes regular assessments by cardiologists (heart doctors) and pulmonologists (lung doctors).
We ensure seamless care for your child as he or she transitions from the inpatient setting at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and other NICUs throughout the Bay Area, to our outpatient Cardiac and Respiratory Care for Infants with BPD (CRIB) clinic.
After you return home
When you visit our outpatient clinic, you can expect the following:
- Your child will be seen by a pulmonologist and cardiologist at each visit.
- Your child may also be seen by a dietitian, respiratory therapist, and social worker.
- Your doctor may order tests, which might include chest x-rays, echocardiograms, and lab tests.
At a minimum, the CRIB Program will provide regular screening visits for your premature infant with severe BPD at about 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 5 years of age. You can expect the following schedule of care, with the possibility of additional imaging studies and lab tests.
