Research and Innovation

The interaction between these two essential organ systems is an active research frontier. We are pursuing more effective functional evaluation strategies, including more informative biomarkers of kidney injury, which will help us identify the patients at highest risk for kidney problems even before symptoms present. Our multidisciplinary team is also cooperating in the search for modifiable risk factors that can help us prevent our cardiac patients from getting kidney injury in the first place, and we are working to develop more effective interventions when that injury is detected. Because the Heart Center is on the cutting edge of pediatric cardiac interventions, such as ventricular assist devices and transplantation, ours is also an ideal group to investigate the relationship between these important advances and kidney function.
