SCAN Program

About the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Program

Stanford Medicine Children’s Health has a screening program designed to recognize, respond to, and manage cases of suspected abuse and harm caused by neglect in patients seen at our hospitals and clinics. The mission of the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) program is to create a standard of excellence for healing children exposed to abuse through education, prevention, detection, and collaboration. The team is composed of child abuse board-certified physicians and a licensed clinical social worker/program manager with expertise in child abuse and neglect. The team provides 24/7 consultation coverage and care for all obstetric and pediatric patients and their families throughout Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford (LPCHS), Stanford Medicine Children’s Health (SCH) ambulatory clinics, and the Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) Emergency Department.

Child abuse is a complex problem that affects all of us and can have lifetime impacts on a child’s well-being and a lasting ripple effect on society. Finding solutions requires input and action from everyone, and the most effective child abuse prevention activities succeed because of partnerships created between child welfare, law enforcement, education, health professionals, and other members of our communities.

If you have concerns about a possible victim of child abuse, please contact your local child welfare or law enforcement agency. County and local child welfare agency listings in all 50 states and the District of Columbia may be found here.
