      Medications in Pregnancy

      Always consult with your physician regarding use of over-the-counter and prescription medications during your pregnancy. The following are general guidelines:

      Acceptable Nonprescription Medications (Use only when necessary)

      • Acetaminophen (Tylenol®)
      • Diphenhydramine (Benadryl®)
      • Guaifenesin (Robitussin®)
      • Dextromethophen
      • Chlorpheniramine-Maleate (Chlor-Trimeton®)
      • Psuedoephedrine (Sudafed®) (Avoid in first trimester and do not use if you have high blood pressure.)
      • Maalox® or Mylanta®
      • Antacid: Tums® and Ro·laids® provide calcium
      • Antibiotics prescribed by a MD who is aware you are pregnant
      • Fiber supplements

      Medications to Avoid When Pregnant

      • RetinA®
      • Tetracycline
      • Doxycycline
      • Oral Hypoglycemic
      • Unless prescribed by MD
      • Ibuprofen, Advil®, Motrin®, Aleve®
      • Aspirin

      Throughout your pregnancy, remember to:

      • Stop Smoking.
      • Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs.
      • Avoid unpasteurized/uncultured cheeses.
      • Avoid eating shark, swordfish, mackerel, or tilefish.
      • Avoid eating raw meat/fish.
      • Eat tuna no more than twice per month.
      • Avoid high temperature (bath/hot tubs over lOOF).
      • Avoid touching cat feces/kitty litter.
      • Take prenatal vitamins daily to reduce your risk of neural tube defect. (Make sure they have at least 400 micrograms of Folic Acid/folacin.)
