Pediatrics is in that sweet spot where you can help somebody by connecting with them emotionally, but there’s also a scientific principle behind it. I love being with the kid and the family, hearing what their needs are and being able to help. Everyone needs to be part of the decision-making so they understand the recommendations and feel they are being treated with care and respect.

Being heard is part of the therapeutic relationship; I listen so that parents and patients know that I understand and we can work together toward solutions. It’s rewarding to work with a nervous parent and make them feel comfortable by helping them realize that they’re doing just fine. Part of my job is to be there to reassure families that kids are resilient; even if there is an issue, kids usually get better.
