My main philosophy is ensuring that patients and their families understand what is happening in their care and feel that they are an equally important part of their loved one’s health journey. In hematology, clear communication and tailored patient and caregiver education is particularly important when breaking down complex, rare, and sometimes serious disease processes.

I like to get to know patients and their families as a whole and incorporate their values and priorities in their care, so that they feel empowered to ask questions and partner with the medical team to build trust. Including the child, adolescent, or young adult patient in the approach to care is also essential. Although patient involvement looks different at different ages and developmental stages, it’s important to involve them and consider their perspective in their care. I enjoy the long-term relationships I get to develop with patients and their families. I especially appreciate the opportunity to see children grow up, live their best lives, and take ownership of their own health.

I knew from a young age that I wanted to become a physician. This likely stemmed from witnessing my parents’ experience with the health care system after we immigrated to the U.S. I knew I wanted to help improve the lives of others in an impactful way. What I didn’t initially appreciate was how teaching as a tool to empower others in their health care would be such an important part of medicine. In the field of hematology, we often deal with complex processes and diseases that aren’t always apparent at first glance. I have the ability to put the various puzzle pieces of patient history, symptoms, and lab findings together in order to gain clarity on hematologic diagnoses and management plans. I am constantly learning as the field continues to grow and evolve, which is another part of the specialty that I enjoy.

Going to a doctor’s office or hospital can be a scary and anxiety-provoking thing, as patients and their families may face very challenging circumstances and diagnoses. My goal is to make sure that families are well-informed and feel heard by the medical team.
