Obesity and Translational Science

Center for Healthy Weight scientists perform cutting-edge basic and translational research in the biology of obesity. Basic research adds to our knowledge about obesity. Translational research applies that knowledge for use in patient care. Our research is done at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Genomics and proteomics studies examine genes and proteins that contribute to:

  • Differences in appetite and energy regulation
  • Risk for diabetes
  • Other obesity-related complications

Animal and human physiological studies look at the many different factors regulating:

  • Energy taken in (intake)
  • Energy used (expenditure)
  • Carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism

Research also includes:

  • Metabolic studies of obesity and conditions associated with obesity
  • Behavioral studies of factors influencing nervous system and metabolic control of
    • Eating
    • Physical activity
    • Sedentary behaviors (activities that require little or no physical activity)
  • Informatics research using powerful computing resources. This ties basic biology with patient characteristics, clinical symptoms and clinical diseases to identify new prevention and treatment approaches.
