Medicine provides a duality for the doctor. There is clearly a set of clinical skills and knowledge that a doctor must have. However, of equal and sometimes even greater importance, there is the complex skill of communicating with the patient and their family to help heal the patient adequately.
I try to be mindful of the stress and anxiety that families go through when they have a concern that their child's heart is involved. When I meet a family, I try to treat them how I would want my kids treated by another doctor.
