Pediatric Kidney Transplant Conditions We Treat
Many of the infants, children and adolescents who need a kidney transplant have been living on dialysis—an artificial process that replaces the non-functioning kidneys. For these young people, kidney transplantation offers a longer-term solution and the prospect of better health and greater independence.
The children that aren’t living on dialysis, but suffer from a complex kidney disease, may or may not need a kidney transplant. Some of these conditions include:
- Blockage of the kidneys present at birth leading to a back-up of urine into the kidneys caused by:
- Ureteropelvic junction obstruction
- Vesicoureteral reflux
- Posterior urethral valves
- Prune belly syndrome
- Megaureter
- Congenital nephrotic syndrome
- Alport syndrome
- Oxalosis
- Nephropathic and juvenile cystinosis
- Polycystic kidney disease
- Nail patella syndrome
- Glomerulonephritis
- Berger’s disease
- Henoch-Schönlein purpura
- Hemolytic uremic syndrome
- Wegener’s granulomatosis
- Goodpasture syndrome
- Schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia (SIOD)
- Autoimmune focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)
