Throughout history, Stanford Medicine has been home to cutting-edge medical advances, including the first successful adult human heart transplant in the country and the first combined heart-lung transplant in the world.

Governance Structure

Stanford Medicine is led by a partnership among the dean and the two hospital CEOs. The CEOs of the hospitals have primary responsibilities for the operations of the hospitals and clinics, and the dean has primary responsibility for the faculty and physicians (including their selection and compensation) as well as the research and teaching that the faculty members undertake (including the training of residents and clinical fellows).

Our market strategy is to be the pediatric specialty and subspecialty care provider of choice for Northern California. To achieve this goal, we have focused on establishing pediatric specialty centers throughout the region, along with building and cultivating joint venture partnerships and collaborating with the highest-quality providers. In addition, we have expanded this access beyond specialty services to include primary care and outreach programs throughout the Bay Area.
