          Genetic Counseling

Depending on your child’s medical condition, you may meet with a genetic counselor. Genetic counselors are Master’s-trained health care professionals with knowledge of basic science, medical genetics, and counseling theory. Genetic counselors help patients understand the medical, psychological and familial impact of genetic disease. Together, you will discuss your family and medical histories so the genetic counselor can assess the chance of disease occurring or recurring. Genetic counselors educate families about genetic inheritance, testing, management, resources and research.  They work with families to promote informed choices about genetic testing and its impact on the patient and other family members.
