Novel Interventions in Children’s Healthcare (NICH) Program

When you have a child who has a complex and chronic (ongoing) condition, it can feel overwhelming. The coordination it takes to meet your child’s multiple medical needs while maintaining a healthy life balance within your family may seem unmanageable. That’s where our research-proven Novel Interventions in Children’s Healthcare (NICH) program comes in. Our pediatric physicians, psychologists, and dedicated interventionists—who are available at all times for questions, needs, and concerns—are here to empower you to handle the many tasks that are required to support your child. By helping to coordinate care and establish a support network for your child, we improve his or her health and well-being, and ultimately the well-being of your family.

Our services

• Improve your child’s physical and mental health, and help to avoid health crises by addressing problems when they are small.
• Help you understand your child’s diagnosis and how to meet their daily care needs.
• Create a network of support for you within your community, school, and home.
• Serve as a liaison between you and your child’s doctors, therapists, technicians, and school support team, which includes attending appointments and meetings when desired.
• Help manage your day-to-day challenges, tasks, appointments, and needs in caring for your medically complex child, including coordinating medical and support services, medications, and medical equipment.
• Troubleshoot housing, food, and transportation issues.
• Help bridge language and cultural barriers so that you are empowered to care for your child and your family.
• Coordinate with other programs that offer wraparound care to families of children with complex medical needs, including the Cardiac and Respiratory Care for Infants with BPD (CRIB) program and the Coordinating and Optimizing Resources Effectively (CORE) program.

Care details

• You are assigned an interventionist (personal advocate) who provides support 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for up to a year.
• Our program is available free of charge to eligible families of children and teens in the greater Bay Area who are receiving care at Stanford Children’s Health.
