Childhood is such a fascinating time the way they’re experiencing the world around them and it’s my job to help make the world seem a little less scary and make a little more sense, without decreasing the wonder of it.
Before diving into a care plan, I try to understand what a patient’s needs and expectations are, and then try and satisfy those. It’s important for me to try and put myself in both the child and parents’ shoes and look at things from their perspectives. I tell my patients that my job is to help them be informed and make the best decisions they can that I’m part of their team.
The saying, “Being a parent is like taking your heart out of your body and letting it walk around outside,” really captures how incredibly vulnerable the parenting experience is. Parenting three kids has been transformative and I try to use my own experiences to help smooth out the wrinkles that crop up along the way.
