Prenatal, Infant and Child Classes

The Perinatal Education Program at Stanford Medicine Children's Health is designed to support every member of your family through the entire perinatal journey from before birth to after baby arrives. We offer a broad spectrum of classes taught by our skilled and certified instructors in both online and in-person formats.

Childbirth Prep Class

Our Childbirth Prep Class focuses on labor and delivery of the baby, providing an overview and emphasizing the many variations of normal birth. Taught by a certified childbirth educator, we will explore practical information through thought-provoking dialogues; have a frank discussion on pain in labor and how to proactively cope with it; directly explore some of the “what-if’s,” medical interventions, and proactive techniques to reduce the potential of needing them.

Breastfeeding Basics

Our prenatal Breastfeeding Seminar is a 2-hour lecture and discussion with a certified lactation consultant. This seminar includes orientation to successful breastfeeding, tips on dealing with the challenges of the early weeks, how both partners can participate in feeding the baby even though only one may be breastfeeding, pumping & storage of breast milk, and more.

Newborn Care

Often touted as our "most fun" class, this program covers the specifics of newborn care. Topics include bathing, temperature-taking, newborn reflexes and behavior, common newborn appearances, diapering, swaddling, soothing, feeding techniques, and more.

Infant Safety and Babyproofing

Our Infant Safety & Babyproofing 101 Class prepares new parents, grandparents, and other childcare providers for creating a safe home environment for infants and toddlers. This class will cover the following topics regarding newborn safety: room by room babyproofing, safe sleep, and poison prevention.

We are pleased to offer comprehensive education and support for you and your entire family. Additional classes include:

  • Becoming New Parents: A Couple’s Seminar
  • Car Seat 101
  • Cesarean Birth
  • Comfort Techniques for Labor
  • CPR: Infant & Child
