Pediatric Leukemia and Lymphoma

Leukemia and lymphoma are among the most common childhood cancers, but that doesn’t make the diagnosis any less scary. At Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, we are here to support your child and family with a combination of the latest treatments and compassionate care.

Stanford researchers and doctors have led pioneering lymphoma treatment and research for more than 50 years, from being among the first to successfully treat lymphoma patients to developing groundbreaking new trials designed to reduce the harmful side effects of lifesaving treatment.

Thankfully, after decades of advances, the survival rate for pediatric leukemia and lymphoma is over 90%. We are working tirelessly to push that survival rate to 100% with new treatments, including promising new clinical trials in cancer immunotherapy and precision medicine for leukemia patients.

Why choose us:

  • We offer clinical trials not available at many other hospitals in the region. We are the only hospital in Northern California that is partnering with two leading U.S. cancer centers, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, to offer innovative leukemia and lymphoma clinical trials. We also offer unique clinical trials that use immunotherapy—supercharging the body’s own immune system to attack cancer—to treat some leukemias. We are the administrative hub of the Pediatric Oncology Experimental Therapeutics Investigators’ Consortium (POETIC), which means our patients can access additional trials not found elsewhere in on the West Coast.
  • Led by Tanja Gruber, MD, PhD, a nationally renowned expert in high-risk leukemias, our team includes doctors who have spent decades treating leukemia and lymphoma and physician-scientists who are working on new ways to fight these diseases.

Using immunotherapy to find and kill cancer cells

Our doctors and researchers are working at the forefront of CAR T-cell therapy, which uses a patient’s own cells to track down and attack leukemia cells. For Salvador De Leon, that gave him another weapon in his fight against leukemia.
