My Approach
I always knew that I wanted a career that would make a difference in people’s lives. I am a first-generation Mexican American, and my family spoke only Spanish. I saw the barriers my parents faced at doctor appointments. Being a doctor gives me an opportunity to change that. I love seeing the smile on my patients’ faces when they discover I speak Spanish and they can feel confident that we will understand each other.
It is important to me to treat my patients like individuals and make them feel comfortable. Developing a treatment plan is about more than a diagnosis. You have to be patient and truly listen. That is how we get down to what is really going on.
Most of the diseases I treat are long-term or lifelong conditions, so building a good relationship is essential. I get to know the patient and their family, and we build a trusting partnership. I love working with kids—they are so honest and really just want to get better.
