We focus on caring for children with central lymphatic disorders—rare, complex conditions that involve major lymphatics in the center of the chest and abdomen that often go hand in hand with heart conditions. When this part of the lymphatic system is not working properly, it can affect heart surgery outcomes and long-term quality of life. We commonly care for children with congenital heart disease, children with complex congenital heart defects (such as single ventricle anomalies), and children who have had a previous complex heart surgery.
About the lymphatic system
The lymphatic system circulates fluid (lymph) throughout the body. It plays a critical role in fluid balance, immune function, and heart health. The heart and the lymphatic system are vitally connected, so when the heart is not working well, lymph fluid can overflow into other areas of the body, such as around the lungs and abdomen. This can lead to long-term problems, including difficulty breathing, problems with fighting infections, and malnutrition. When we can catch these lymphatic problems early on and treat them, children who need heart surgery can have better outcomes.
Central conducting lymphatic anomaly (CCLA)—A complex, rare group of disorders that can cause a variety of symptoms and often have an underlying genetic cause. We diagnose these conditions and partner with our Vascular Anomalies Clinic to provide expert, coordinated care.
Chylothorax—A serious, rare condition in which lymphatic fluid leaks into the chest cavity, putting pressure on the lungs and affecting breathing.
Chylous ascites—An abnormal buildup of lymphatic fluid in the abdomen, which can cause swelling and discomfort.
Lymphatic dysfunction after congenital heart surgery—Children with heart disease are at increased risk for lymphatic complications after surgery. We offer targeted treatments to improve lymphatic flow and reduce symptoms.
Multicompartment lymphatic disease—A serious, rare condition in which lymphatic fluid leaks into multiple areas of the body due to abnormal flow or blockage.
Plastic bronchitis—A serious, rare lymphatic disorder in which lymphatic fluid leaks into the airways, forming rubbery casts (plugs) that can block breathing. This condition is more common for children with single ventricle heart disease, and we partner with our high-volume Single Ventricle Program to provide exceptional care.
Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE)—A complex condition whereby the gastrointestinal tract loses necessary proteins, which can lead to swelling, poor growth, and other complications. This condition is also more common in children with single ventricle heart disease.
