What to Expect at the Biochemical Genetics Visit

Preparing for your Biochemical Genetics visit

• Write down your questions and concerns prior to your first visit.
• Fill out and bring our intake form, which was sent prior to your visit. It asks about your/your child’s medical and family history.
• Bring any prescription medication bottles for you/your child, along with laboratory results, imaging scans/results, and any past genetic testing results.
• Clinical appointments typically last one hour or so. If we are meeting via telehealth, your child must be present.

What to expect during your visit

• A geneticist/genetic counselor will review your reason for the referral, your medical and family history, and your past test results. They will provide recommendations, which may include further genetic testing or a referral to another specialist.
• You/your child may also meet with a registered dietitian if dietary management is needed for an inborn error of metabolism. You also may meet with a social worker.
• If we recommend further genetic testing, you/your child may be scheduled that day or soon after, and we will report the results to you once they are completed.
• Please note that insurance coverage of genetic services and testing can vary. We encourage you to check with your insurance provider to determine coverage.
