Our Team

Karen Waymen, PhD

Karen will oversee the Parent Mentor Learning Center. In this capacity she will provide support and resources to help other hospitals start, improve and expand their parent mentor programs.

Karen has been a leader in family-centered health care at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health since 1998. As Director of Family-Centered Care, Karen developed an integrated network of 15 Family Advisory Councils that includes several special interest councils: Latinx; Disabilities; Information Services; Research and Patient Safety.  Along with this work, Karen oversaw the formation of a cadre of FCC parents who participate as co-designers in quality improvements.

Key to the Learning Center, Karen established the Parent Mentor and Parent 2 Parent Programs at Stanford Children’s.  The Parent Mentor program provides family support and education to parents in over 11 service lines as well as to families from diverse populations. The Parent 2 Parent program offers family education on patient safety topics: hand hygiene; falls prevention; skin injury awareness and infection control.

In 2024, Karen assumed a new role at Stanford Children’s - Family Centered Care Research & Innovation. In this capacity, Karen is working with the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health to create a Parent Mentor Learning Center to promote the value of parent mentors in healthcare settings.

Sandy Orozco

Sandy Orozco is the Learning Center’s Project Manager. In this capacity Sandy will be the point of contact for Learning Center activities.  She will set up webinars, podcasts and be available to answer your questions about the Parent Mentor Learning Center. 

Prior to her role as Project Manager, Sandy worked as a Research Assistant in the Department of Family-Centered Care at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health since 2019.  Her fluency in Spanish and cultural understanding ensures that family-centered programs at Stanford Children’s are responsive to Spanish-speaking families. Sandy is currently pursuing her master’s in public health and brings a strong foundation in research and community health to her work, aiming to improve the overall experience for all families at Stanford Children’s. 

Teresa Jurado

Teresa has experience as a peer-to-peer mentor in both community and hospital settings.  She will use this experience to provide insights and support for Learning Center members.    

Teresa Jurado has worked in the Department of Family-Centered Care at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health since 2014. She started as a Parent Mentor and is now an Assistant Manager in the Department. Teresa oversees the Parent Mentor Program and the Parent 2 Parent Health Education Program providing patient safety education to parents at the bedside. She also leads the Disabilities Family Advisory Council. Teresa has an adult son with disabilities and complex medical issues.  

Nancy Buhr, BS

Nancy will be overseeing the content for the Parent Mentor Learning Center on the SMCH external website, as well as working on external communications.

She has been a parent leader in the Department of Family-Centered Care at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health since 2019. In this role, she leads three Family Advisory Councils—the Bass Center (Oncology/Hematology), Information Systems, and Patient Safety—and actively contributes to various hospital committees, ensuring the parent voice and perspective are represented. Nancy has a young adult son with hemophilia who has received care at SMCH since birth.  

Kate Mayer, BA

Kate provides media support for the Parent Mentor Learning Center. In this capacity she oversees the development of videos and podcasts for the Learning Center members.

Kate Mayer has worked in the Department of Family-Centered Care at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health since 2019.  She serves on Family Advisory Councils, works in patient safety, writes blog entries and makes training videos for parent mentors and parent-to-parent educators.  Kate’s son was treated for biphenotypic leukemia and had a bone marrow transplant at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health. 

Mariel Spengler, MTS

Mariel will be providing information and resources related to developing and sustaining Family Advisory Councils. 

Mariel is an assistant manager in the Department of Family-Centered Care at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health.  As a part of her role, Mariel handles new parent onboarding and coordinates the department’s 14 Family Advisory Councils.  In that capacity, she supports the FAC leads and creates monthly education modules for all parent advisors. Mariel has a young adult son, who was born with a complex congenital heart defect. 

Christine Rehak, BSHIM

Christine provides analytics support for the Parent Mentor Learning Center.  In this capacity she will assist with the development of a metrics toolkit and provide guidance on working with EMRs to streamline parent mentor documentation.

Christine has been with the Department of Family-Centered Care since 2018 where she focuses on data collection, visualization, and analytics that aid in informed decision-making for the department. She holds a degree in Health Information Management and will be working to obtain her RHIA and CHDA credentials this year.
