In the Room

The hospital room

Your child’s nurse will tell you about the room and how to use the provided TV and iPad. Please talk to your child’s bedside nurse if you have questions, concerns, or trouble with anything in the room.

Temperature in the room

All the hospital rooms have the thermostat set for 70°F and 75°F (21°C and 24°C).

In the Main Building, you can adjust the thermostat in your child’s room.

In the West Building, if you would like to change the temperature in your child’s room, talk to your nurse. They will call to have the temperature changed.

Window shades

In the Main Building, you can use the switch on the wall to raise or lower the window shades. If you adjust the thermostat and the room does not cool after an hour, the window shades will close on their own. If you prefer them open, use the switch on the wall to open the shades.

In the West Building, you can open or close the window shades by pulling the cord.

Housekeeping

Housekeeping cleans patient rooms at least once each day. If you can, clear the floor, counters, and bed tray of personal items so they can be cleaned. If you need extra housekeeping services, please ask your nurse.

Technology in the room

All our hospital rooms have iPads and TVs available for your use, either for entertainment or to learn more about your child’s care.

This section contains instruction on setting up the TV and iPads for entertainment or education.

Television

GetWell TV has many TV channels, movies, and other types of entertainment as well as information about the hospital and patient education.

Use Channel 71 to watch a show from Sophie’s Place (our in-house studio) on your hospital TV. These shows often have prizes. Watch for a telephone icon to appear on the screen and call the studio to play along.

  • Click on the arrow and squares icon to watch videos on specific health conditions.
  • Click on the paper and pencil icon to see the photos and name of the care team.
  • Click on the multi-colored tile icon to play video games on the STEAM gaming system.
  • Click on the hands icon to view information about your stay at the hospital.
  • Click on the flower icon to send a compliment to our staff.
  • Click on the ‘H’ icon to see information about the hospital.
  • Click on the paper people icon to change your emoji or watch a story.
  • Click on the colored balloons icon to see what is going on in the playrooms.

To use the TV

  • Turn on the TV using the pillow speaker.
  • Change channels using the up-down arrows on the pillow speaker.
  • If the up-down arrows stop working, try the left-right arrows and then try the up-down arrows again.
  • If the TV isn’t working, turn it off and on again using the pillow speaker.

Things to know

  • The keyboard works with the patient TV only. No keyboard is available for the parent/family TV.
  • The home button on the keyboard does not work.
  • The fast-forward button does not work on the patient TV.
  • Closed captions only work for TV channels, not for movies or health videos.
  • On the home screen, select ‘My Action Plan’ to watch health videos chosen for you by the care team.

iPads

You are always welcome to use your own iPad or cell phone.

We have free, high-speed Wi-Fi for all in the hospital. The network name is: StanfordChildrens

Hospital iPads are mounted on the wall near the parent bed in the patient rooms in the Main Building. Parents and caregivers are welcome to use this iPad to connect to the internet.

Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the iPad from the wall. If you have trouble taking the iPad down from the wall, ask the nurse for help. Please do not pull on the iPad, because this will break it. To recharge the iPad, place it back in the holder on the wall.

Unlocking the iPad

  • Press the home button on the iPad.
  • Choose your language from the list on the screen.
  • Tap on the lock icon.
  • Press and hold the second lock that appears for a few seconds.
  • After you hear the click, you can take the iPad down from the wall.
  • If you are having trouble unlocking or removing the iPad, contact the nurse for help.
  • To charge the iPad, place it back on the wall holder.
  • All iPads are the owned by Stanford Medicine Children’s Health. They will not work if they are taken out of the hospital.
